UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital

Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO) undertakes vision research and via their links with NIHR Biomedical Research Centre for Ophthalmology at Moorfields Eye Hospital (MEH), sensing for ocular disease including: extensive structure – function studies particularly in glaucoma and retinal disease.

Professor Chris Dainty, a Professorial Research Associate at IoO. He has graduated 65 PhD students, mentored more than 75 post-docs, received numerous awards and distinctions, and was elected a member of the Royal Irish Academy in 2008. Prof. David Garway-Heath, Imaging and visual function in Glaucoma, biomechanics, technology assessment. Prof. Phil Luthert, Ocular Pathologist. Dr. Pearse Keane, prestigious “Clinician Scientist” NIHR 2015 award, use of OCT imaging in the eye, nanotechnology. Dr Ranjan Rajendram on spectroscopic OCT and detecting proteins in the eye, Consultant Ophthalmologist, Medical Retina.

Access to experimental models of retinal disease and advanced OCT and fluorescein angiography facilities. Shared site with Moorfields Eye Hospital and Biomedical Research Centre for Ophthalmology, which allows access to leading patient imaging capabilities: Fluorescein and ICG angiographic imaging, Multiple spectral domain and swept source OCTs from various manufacturers, Optos wide field imaging, advanced ultrasound, GDx, HRT, High speed AS OCT and adaptive optics SLO.

Previous and Current Involvement in Research and Training Programmes:
Multiple research programmes involving clinical and non-clinical researchers: MD, MSc, PhD programmes. Clinical Lecturer programme. Associate partner in a Marie Curie European Industrial Doctorate with KENT and NKT, Feb. 2014-Jan. 2018, UBAPHODESA.
